What is Shallow Sea?

Shallow Sea is a multi-player puzzle game by Yeom CW, published by Bad Comet Games in Dutch via DSV Games. The game is suitable for 1 to 4 players, ages 14 and up, with a playing time of 30 to 45 minutes. Shallow Sea is available in Dutch and includes an official solo mode. The game material contains no text and is completely language-independent.

How does a game proceed?

Each player has their own ocean board on which they build their personal reef. In the middle of the table lies the central market with fish and coral tiles. On each turn, the active player chooses via drafting a combination of a fish and a coral or sea life tile from the market and places both on his ocean board.

Through which channels you reach those people, classic and out of the box. Tiles & Sets you try to create the right patterns. The central completion mechanism revolves around color: when fish of the correct color gather around a coral tile, the coral is completed. The tile is flipped over, giving the coral a new function as a home for fish. Which fish you place in the completed coral is a conscious choice: those fish contribute to further patterns on your board.

The most distinctive element of Shallow Sea Compared to other puzzle games, it is the dynamics of the elements themselves. Tiles activate, deactivate, and move in response to placements. This makes it possible to complete multiple coral tiles simultaneously in a single well-planned turn via a chain of reactions. Shell tokens are the tactical key resource. You earn a shell every time you complete a tile. You can use these shells to refresh the market, freely choose a tile-fish combination outside the standard draft selection, or move a fish on your board. The latter is the most powerful use: moving a fish to the correct position can set a chain of coral completions in motion in a single turn.

Sea Life tiles are larger creations that require specific patterns of fish or coral to complete. They yield more points but also require more planning and board layout. Ecosystem cards define two additional scoring objectives at the start of the game that vary per session and guide strategic priorities. The game ends when only four empty spaces remain on the ocean board.
