Ticket to Ride – Northern Lights is a standalone ticket and rail experience within the beloved Ticket to Rideseries. In this game, you travel through the Scandinavian countries of Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland. You connect cities via railways and ferries, trying to claim valuable routes and make smart choices based on your cards. The goal remains classic for Ticket to Ride: create the most valuable networks and score more points than your fellow players.
This edition adds variety with bonus objectives that can change from game to game. Each round uses four random bonus cards from a set of eleven, meaning you'll want to explore different strategies and pursue different objectives each time.
During your turn, you have three actions: draw train or loco cards, use your cards to claim a rail or ferry route, or draw additional destination cards. Train and loco cards fuel your rail routes. To claim a route, you must play the correct combination of cards that correspond to the color and length of the route. Longer routes generally yield more points but also cost more in cards.
Destination cards grant you interim public objectives: at the end of the game, you'll receive bonus points for connecting the corresponding cities. At the same time, be careful not to miss out on valuable routes, as unfulfilled destination cards will result in penalty points.
Bonus objectives function like shared scorecards, selected at the start of each game. Each game has four active objectives, such as connecting cities in a specific country or having the longest uninterrupted route. This changes the focus of your tactics from game to game.
Like other Ticket to Ride titles, Northern Lights is designed with an easy entry point. The basic actions are quickly explained and can be picked up within five minutes at the table. At the same time, there's plenty of tactical depth in the choices you make: when to claim routes, which destination cards to keep, and how to achieve bonus objectives. This makes it accessible to families with children aged around 8 and up, but also appealing enough for experienced players who enjoy route planning and map management.
A game of Ticket to Ride – Northern Lights typically lasts between 30 and 60 minutes, making it perfect for a casual evening without dragging on too long. The game time depends on the number of players and how quickly everyone chooses which routes they want to claim during the race for points.
This board game is designed for 2 to 5 players and is accessible for ages 8 and up. The combination of card management, route planning, and variable bonus objectives makes the game feel dynamic and strategic, but not overwhelming. The limited rules and short learning time make it suitable for families and beginners, while experienced players will enjoy the tactical possibilities.
Northern Lights builds on the classic Ticket to Ride mechanic, but enriches the game with variable bonus goals that change with each play session. Unlike some other editions, such as the Scandinavian Nordic Countries version, which is limited to smaller player counts, Northern Lights supports up to five players, making it more in line with the standard Ticket to Ride experience and allowing for a larger group.
Ticket to Ride – Northern Lights fits into the family of strategic route-building and network simulations. Compared to the original Ticket to Ride, Northern Lights is slightly more compact in terms of play area but offers a new focus on bonus objectives and Nordic routes. Compared to refined versions like Ticket to Ride: Europe or themed versions like Ticket to Ride: Nordic Countries, Northern Lights feels broader in terms of player count and variety thanks to the selection of bonus cards. Unlike strategic Euro games like Carcassonne of Catan, the focus here remains more consistently on map management and smart route claiming, which gives a different tactical dynamic.
Ticket to Ride – Northern Lights is an excellent choice for those who enjoy accessible strategy board games. The combination of route planning, objective cards, and changing bonus challenges makes every play session feel different, keeping the game exciting again and again. With a playtime of about half an hour to an hour and an accessible theme, it's ideal for families, game nights with friends, and players who enjoy tactical thinking without complicated rules.
