What is Cascadia?

Cascadia is a tile-laying game by designer Randy Flynn, published in Dutch by White Goblin Games. The game is suitable for 1 to 4 players, ages 10 and up, with a playing time of 30 to 60 minutes. Cascadia won the Spiel des Jahres in 2022, the most prestigious award in the board game world.

In Cascadia Players each build their own ecosystem, based on the Pacific Northwest region of North America. By laying habitat tiles and placing animal tokens, you try to assemble a landscape that is as harmonious and high-scoring as possible. The combination of spatial tile puzzles and variable scoring patterns per animal species makes the game accessible in concept but strategic in execution.

How does a game proceed?

At the start of a game, each player receives a starting habitat of three hexagonal tiles and a corresponding animal. Four tile-token combinations are available in the center of the table: each turn, you choose one of these combinations and add the tile to your growing habitat. The corresponding animal token is placed on a tile that accepts that animal.
