The game of chess

The game is played by two players on an 8 by 8 board with alternating light and dark colors. Each player starts with 16 pieces: a King, a Queen, two Bishops, two Knights, two Rooks, and eight Pawns.

The goal of chess is to checkmate the opponent's King: a position in which the King is threatened and is no longer able to evade or block that threat. Each piece type moves in its own unique way. The Queen is the most powerful piece and moves in all directions across the entire board. The Rook moves horizontally and vertically. The Bishop moves diagonally. The Knight jumps in an L-shape and is the only piece that can jump over other pieces. The Pawns move one square forward but capture diagonally.

The character identities are deliberately linked to the chess roles: Link as Protector of Hyrule is the King who must be protected at all costs, while Ganondorf as his eternal counterpart is the Black King who must be fallen.
