Hegemony: Lead Your Class to Victory is an asymmetrical political-economic board game by Vangelis Bagiartakis and Varnavas Timotheou, published by Hegemonic Project Games. The game is suitable for 2 to 4 players, ages 14 and up, with a playing time of 90 to 180 minutes. hegemony It is entirely in English and was developed in consultation with academics to provide as realistic and thematically coherent a picture of political and economic systems as possible.
The country is in turmoil. Four socio-economic classes are vying for power in a fictional democratic nation. The rules of the game are also the rules of society: taxes, the labor market, foreign trade, social security, and policy. Whoever navigates their class best through that system wins hegemony.
Each player chooses one of the four fully asymmetrical classes. The Working Class represents the nation's workers: they seek employment at companies of the Capitalist Class, strive for higher wages and social security, and can organize strikes to exert pressure. The Capitalist Class builds and manages companies, sets wages, determines production levels, and optimizes profits. The Middle Class combines elements of both: they work partly as employees and partly run their own small businesses, giving them a hybrid position between the other classes. The State attempts to manage the economy as a whole through taxes, subsidies, public services, and regulation, and tries to avoid debt while meeting the needs of all classes.
Through which channels you reach those people, classic and out of the box. worker placement Players deploy their workers to action spaces on the central board for production, trade, recruitment, and other economic activities. Via hand management Players play policy cards and event cards that temporarily or permanently affect the game state.
The political system is one of the most distinctive elements of the game. Players can submit legislative proposals, and votes are cast on specific policies in areas such as tax rates, minimum wage, trade agreements, and social security benefits. Every passed bill changes the rules of the game for all players, making every voting round a crucial instrument of power.
The game draws thematically and mechanically from real economic and political ideologies: socialism, neoliberalism, nationalism, and globalism are not merely decorative labels but influence the available strategies and the weighting of various policy choices.
hegemony This is a heavy to very heavy game with a significant learning curve. Each class has its own board, action options, and win conditions. The interaction between classes via the labor market, the tax system, and the voting process requires multiple games to fully understand. The English text on cards is limited, but the system itself is complex. Recommended for experienced strategy players who enjoy thematically coherent, heavy games.
hegemony It is ideally suited for players who enjoy political and economic systems and who consider thematic coherence just as important as mechanical depth. It is also an excellent game for groups wishing to explore political and societal themes within a game context. The academic foundation also makes the game interesting for those studying or interested in economics, political science, or sociology.
The asymmetrical class dynamics is the most distinctive element of hegemony. In most asymmetric games, the classes are balance problems that the designer tries to solve. In hegemony The classes are deliberately unequal and interdependent: the Working Class needs work from the Capitalist Class, which in turn needs employees. The State depends on both for tax revenue. This structural interdependence makes every interaction thematically logical and mechanically interesting at the same time.
hegemony is difficult to compare directly because it creates a virtually unique segment in the board game market: a fully simulated national economy as a game environment. The most related game by the same designers is World Order, which applies the same focus on system depth to international geopolitics. Outside of Hegemonic Project, it compares itself to Pax Pamir as an asymmetrical power game in which cooperation and betrayal of allies go hand in hand, and with An Infamous Traffic as an economic simulation game with a societal context.
