Carcassonne: Towers & Thieves (also known as The Tower) is the fourth major expansion for the tile-laying game Carcassonne. This expansion introduces 18 new landscape tiles with tower foundations and an impressive cardboard tower that serves as a tile holder for all expansions. The most striking feature is the 30 wooden tower sections. With these sections, players can build upwards on the game board. It is essential to note that this is an expansion; you need the base game Carcassonne to play with this set. The expansion is known for increasing direct interaction and strategic battles between players.
During a game of Carcassonne: Towers & Thieves, the principle of Tiles & Sets remains the same, but the tower foundations completely change the dynamics. When a player places a tile with a foundation, they have three extra action options: placing one of their own vassals on the tile, placing a wooden tower section on the foundation, or placing one of their own vassals on top of an existing tower to complete it. When you place a tower section, you may capture an opponent's vassal standing in a straight line from the tower. The scope of this action increases as the tower gets taller. Captured vassals can be traded for other prisoners or bought off with victory points, adding a strong layer of Take That to the game.
Despite the impressive wooden components, Carcassonne: Towers & Thieves is not difficult to learn. The rules for building towers and capturing serfs are very straightforward. The complexity lies primarily in spatial awareness; players must constantly keep an eye on which serfs are within range of a growing tower. This requires a more proactive attitude than in the base game. For players accustomed to the gradual development of the landscape, this set introduces a challenging learning curve regarding risk management and defensive tile placement.
This expansion is ideally suited for players who enjoy direct confrontation and in-depth tactics. If you find the base game too passive, this set provides the necessary action and interaction. It is an excellent choice for groups that play regularly and want to hone their tactical skills in Area Control. Due to the visual appeal of the wooden towers and the handy tile holder, it is also a favorite among collectors. Although there is no specific Solo mode, the tower offers great practical added value as a tile holder for any gaming session, regardless of the number of players.
Carcassonne: Towers & Thieves is worthwhile because it introduces a unique vertical element rarely seen in other tile-laying games. The wooden tower pieces are of excellent quality and give the landscape an impressive 3D effect. The mechanism involving capturing vassals creates an exciting dynamic where the balance of power on the board can shift in a single turn. Furthermore, the included cardboard tower is a very handy accessory for organizing the large number of tiles from various expansions neatly and clearly on the table. It increases replayability by introducing a constant threat that forces players to step outside their comfort zone.
When we compare the impact of Carcassonne: Towers & Thieves with other titles, we see similarities with the aggressive interaction in Small World or the spatial constraints in Santorini. Just like the blockades in Ticket to Ride, the rook serves as an instrument to directly thwart the opponent's plans. In terms of difficulty, the base game remains comparable to titles such as Cascaidia, but the addition of the hostage situations brings it tactically close to titles such as Munchkin. Where games like 7 Wonders While often focusing on optimizing one's own points, this expansion does so for eliminating enemy vassals, raising the focus and drama of the gameplay to a level rarely reached in other family expansions.
Carcassonne: Towers & Thieves is the perfect expansion for those looking for more battle, interaction, and an impressive table presentation. With the arrival of the towers, no vassal is safe anymore, and you must constantly be on your guard against your fellow players' plans. It combines tactical depth with handy accessories that enhance every Carcassonne session. Are you ready to literally play your opponents off the board?
