What is Azul Duel?

Azul Duel is the tactical two-player variant of the award-winning tile game Blue, designed by Michael Kiesling and published by Next Move Games. The game is suitable for 2 players only, ages 10 and up, with a playing time of 30 to 45 minutes. Azul Duel is playable immediately without the base game and is available in Dutch. The game materials are completely language-independent.

In Azul Duel You and your opponent have been chosen by King Manuel I of Portugal as the best artists in the country. Only one of you can earn the honor of decorating the ceiling of the Royal Palace in Sintra. The task is demanding and the competition is direct: every tile you take is one your rival can no longer use.

How does a game proceed?

The game proceeds over five rounds, each consisting of three phases. In the collection phase, players take turns selecting tiles from the five factories on the central game board. The factories in Azul Duel are divided into a sun and moon section, offering two options per factory. You may take all tiles of one color from the sun section of one factory; the remaining tiles go to that factory's bonus token. Or you take all top tiles of the same color from the moon sections of all factories at once.

The tiling phase is the core of the scoring mechanism. Completed pattern lines are processed and tiles are placed on the dome board. The dome board of Azul Duel is not predetermined: players choose for themselves in which pattern to decorate their dome via the dome plates, each of which offers a different segment pattern. That freedom of choice in the pattern makes Azul Duel More tactical than the base game, where the grid pattern is fixed.

The dome slabs are also an active dilemma each round. In addition to the tiles, players can also take dome slabs from the factories. Every turn, you have to choose: do I take the color tiles I need, or do I take the dome slab that my opponent would otherwise take? That tension of choice is missing in the base game with two players and makes Azul Duel ideally suited for that player size.

Bonus tokens appear on factories as tiles are removed and grant extra benefits to whoever takes them. The four variable scoring tiles determine additional objectives at the start of each session that differ per game and change the focus points of the puzzle.

Is it difficult to learn?

Azul Duel is quickly explained for whom the base game Blue already knows. New players learn the basic rules using the Dutch game rules. The game materials contain no text. Players aged 10 and up can join in effortlessly.
