  3. Marvel Champions: The Card Game

Marvel Champions

This time it was my turn to Marvel Champions , a card game where you take on the role of a Marvel character and try to save the world from evil. In this case, that evil comes in the form of a different villain per game. The heroes work together against the opponent, so it is a cooperative card game. The following heroes are at your disposal: Iron man, She Hulk, Spiderman, Black Panther, mystery joker and Captain Marvel.

You start by choosing your character, in my case T’Challa. Now I must confess right away: the reason I choose him is that I have a soft spot for names with an apostrophe in them, even Sheldon Cooper becomes wildly attractive to me when I hear him speak Klingon…. In reality, I am vastly behind in watching Marvel and have not seen the movie yet. Unbelievable for my fellow players, who are all super fans and have seen all the films at least once. I therefore start the game 1-0 behind. The game itself is great to play and really fun without being a big Marvel fan. But of course I have done nothing with my fellow players. They find that the extra recognisability and more or less subtle references to the “real” Marvel world gives the game an extra dimension. [/ Vc_column_text] [/ vc_column_inner] [/ vc_row_inner]

Just like in normal Everyday hero life, your character has two forms: the hero and the alter ego. For example, if you’ve chosen Tony Stark, you can alternate between Tony Stark himself and Iron Man. If you are your alter ego, you are totally and completely unrecognizable to your opponent and he will not attack you. Not that that makes life easier for you, because while you can catch your breath and recover, at the same time the opponent takes the time to work on his goal at his leisure. And when he achieves his goal, you lose as well.

The goal of your bet is therefore quite simple: Defeat the opponent before he reaches his goal. Since it is of course too much of a hassle for your hero to be constantly tossed back and forth between his different personalities, you may only switch between your hero and his alter ego once per turn. In reality I rarely use it, I am generally in my hero form. In hero form, you can do three different actions: attack, defend and sabotage the opponent’s goal. Note: you have to choose one of those three. But it’s a card game after all, so you use cards to support all of that. [/ Vc_column_text] [/ vc_column_inner] [/ vc_row_inner]

Each hero has its own set of cards and you choose which role as hero you want to play: protection, agression, justice or leadership. This also includes a specific set of cards. Each character also has its own optimal way of playing. For example, T’Challa builds up his suit and when you continue
